Statement from NAF President & CEO Brittany Fonteno:
The Trump administration’s outrageous move to drop the federal case against Idaho shows that they prioritize their anti-abortion political agenda over the health and lives of women and pregnant people. It flies in the face of good medicine, and shows that they have no respect for doctors’ expertise in providing necessary, life-saving care to their patients.
The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) is a decades-old federal law requiring hospitals to provide stabilizing care for all patients in emergencies, including for women and people who are pregnant. This should be the norm in every state—this is critical care. Instead, Trump and his allies in the anti-abortion movement are using this as another opportunity to attack abortion, putting pregnant Idahoans at extreme risk and creating more confusion, fear, and stigma.
Abortion care is essential health care. Medical professionals must be able to provide the life-saving care that their patients need—without political interference. No matter what, NAF will continue to serve as a national network of support for patients and providers across our country.
NAF remains committed to helping as many people as possible access high-quality and affordable abortion care. Anyone in any state can call the National Abortion Hotline at 1-800-772-9100 to understand their options and get the assistance they need, whether that’s help finding a provider, arranging travel to another state, or funding for their care.
