Helping People Get Care - National Abortion Federation

In addition to being the professional association of abortion providers, NAF also provides direct service to patients who need help accessing abortion care. We run a toll-free, multi-lingual Hotline for abortion referrals and financial assistance in the U.S. and Canada. We provide callers with accurate information, confidential consultation, options counseling, and referrals to providers of quality abortion care. We also provide case management services and limited financial assistance to help people afford the cost of their care and travel-related expenses. The Hotline is free and offers services to everyone, regardless of their individual situation.

What it Really Costs to Get an Abortion

No one plans to have an abortion until they need one

and when they do, it's unlikely they have money set aside for the procedure, much less the additional costs that they will need to cover in order to obtain care. Our National Abortion Hotline is the largest national, toll-free Hotline to help people find quality abortion providers and help them raise the funds to pay for their care and the associated costs:

Abortion Care

Abortion providers have kept the costs of abortion care as low as they can and many of our members help patients raise money, arrange travel, and access other community support. However, since many people don’t have insurance that will cover their procedure, it can be hard for them to afford this essential health care service. The average cost of a first-trimester aspiration abortion is $508, while a medication abortion averages $535. A second-trimester abortion can cost more than $2,000.

Travel

65% of patients who go to NAF member clinics have to travel up to 50 miles round trip for a single appointment. And 13 states require patients to make at least two in-person trips to the clinic .

Child Care

59% of patients who have abortions are already parents so many have to arrange and pay for child care in order to get to their abortion appointment.

Time off from Work

In addition to paying for their care and travel expenses, people often have to take off work—sometimes for multiple days in order to obtain an abortion. This can result in lost wages—or worse—as some patients risk losing their jobs if they have to be out for their procedure.

Every dollar donated to our patient assistance funds goes directly to helping patients access the abortion care they need. These funds help cover abortion care, travel-related expenses, translation services, and other practical support needs of patients.

Rachel Falls Patient Assistance Fund

The Rachel Falls Patient Assistance Fund helps patients who would otherwise not be able to afford the costs associated with the abortion care they need. This fund honors the many contributions former Hotline Director Rachel Falls made to the National Abortion Hotline and to the reproductive justice movement. Every dollar donated to this fund, goes to help women obtain the safe, high-quality abortion care they need.

Dr. Tiller Patient Assistance Fund

The Dr. Tiller Patient Assistance Fund helps cover travel-related expenses for patients seeking abortion care, including pre-paid gas cards. This fund honors the many contributions of NAF member Dr. George Tiller who was murdered by an anti-abortion extremist in 2009. By donating to this fund, 100% of your gift will go to help women access the safe, high-quality abortion care they need.
