Georgia Abortion Ban Struck Down

Today, a judge struck down Georgia’s early abortion ban as unconstitutional on the grounds that at the time when the ban was passed in 2019, Roe v. Wade was still the law of the land.
Statement from Melissa Fowler, National Abortion Federation’s Chief Program Officer:
“This is another critical win for abortion access after last week’s midterm results showed that voters across the country strongly support their and their neighbors ability to access abortion care. While this ruling provides much-needed relief, this ban should have never been allowed to go into effect in the first place. Every week it has been in place has meant devastating consequences for people in Georgia—particularly for Black and low-income communities and others denied care in their home state. The ban forced patients to either travel great distances and overcome additional barriers or to remain pregnant against their will.
Today’s ruling is just the first step in protecting abortion access in the state and unfortunately, we know the fight doesn’t end here. The repercussions of the Dobbs decision continue to reverberate across the country, and we must continue to fight back against each and every anti-abortion politician and piece of legislation that threatens our reproductive rights. We will keep working alongside our members and other advocates to ensure harmful policies like this Georgia ban are not allowed to stand.
We remain committed to helping anyone, no matter their income, race, or zip code, access abortion care. Anyone in any state can call the NAF Hotline at 1-800-772-9100 to understand their options and get the assistance they need, whether that’s help finding a provider, arranging travel to another state, or funding their care.”
