Statement from Brittany Fonteno, President & CEO of the National Abortion Federation
The Georgia Supreme Court’s decision to reinstate an unconstitutional abortion ban is cruel and devastating but also completely unsurprising. This move demonstrates yet again that anti-abortion lawmakers and judges are more concerned with advancing a callous political agenda than protecting people’s safety, wellbeing, and freedom.
Every time abortion is banned or further restricted it leads to fear, confusion, and stigma that prevents people from seeking the critical health care they need or worse, threatens their lives. We cannot forget that Amber Thurman and Candi Miller died entirely preventable deaths that were a direct result of Georgia’s abortion ban.
Furthermore, this decision puts health care providers in the impossible position of having to simultaneously navigate caring for their patients and adjusting to rapidly changing legal constraints that are unjust and medically unnecessary. Providers must be able to do their jobs and provide compassionate, evidence-based care to their patients without interference from politicians.
While we are incredibly disappointed today, we will not be deterred. NAF won’t stop fighting until everyone, everywhere—no matter who they are, where they live, or how much money they have—has the ability to access compassionate and equitable abortion care.
