Leading Litigator Talcott Camp Joins NAF as Chief Legal and Strategy Officer

Today, the National Abortion Federation (NAF) announced that Talcott Camp, JD, will join NAF as the Chief Legal and Strategy Officer in early May.

“Talcott Camp is a fierce advocate for abortion providers and has fought inside and outside the courtroom to preserve the constitutional right to abortion care,” said The Very Reverend Katherine Hancock Ragsdale, NAF President and CEO. “She is just as responsible for ensuring access to safe abortion care in this country as the many medical providers she has represented. We are delighted that she will be joining NAF’s leadership.”

Talcott is a distinguished litigator who has represented NAF and its members in challenging restrictions on safe abortion care, keeping clinics open in some of the states most hostile to abortion rights. She is a brilliant legal mind and nationally recognized expert in analyzing the implications of legal restrictions for medical practice, patient outcomes, and community wellbeing.

“Talcott’s legal expertise, strategic vision, and deep commitment to abortion providers make her the perfect fit for NAF at this critical moment for our members,” said Ragsdale.

At NAF, Talcott will be responsible for all legal activities and will take a lead role in shaping the strategic direction of NAF programs and membership services. For the last year, she has been the co-chair of NAF’s Task Force to help NAF and its members navigate the looming threats to care, and this strategic thinking and focus on provider sustainability will be key to her new role.

“Throughout my career, I have worked to protect clinicians who devote their lives to ensuring that individuals can access the abortion care they need,” said Camp. “They are heroes, NAF is such an important lifeline for them, and I am honored to join this team.”

Talcott spent 25 years at the ACLU, most recently as Deputy Director of the Reproductive Freedom Project. In this role, she devised strategy and directed and supervised advocacy and litigation to protect clinicians providing contraception and abortion from political interference. She was lead or supervising counsel in court challenges to restrictions on reproductive health care in multiple states, including successfully arguing Edwards v. Beck­—challenging an Arkansas ban on abortion as early as 12 weeks—in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. Talcott received her law degree from Columbia University and her bachelor’s degree from Yale University.
