Statement from Brittany Fonteno, President & CEO of the National Abortion Federation
On Thursday, a judge in Ohio overturned the state’s abortion ban, citing the voter-approved amendment that enshrined the right to abortion in Ohio’s state constitution. The ballot measure passed last year with a 56% majority.
Statement from Brittany Fonteno, President and CEO of the National Abortion Federation:
“I am encouraged by Judge Jenkins’ decision to overturn the ban in accordance with the constitutional amendment that passed last year and am hopeful this will send a strong signal to Ohio lawmakers that they have a mandate to ensure Ohioans have the ability to make their own reproductive decisions—as the amendment reads. For nearly a year now, the Ohio Attorney General has blatantly disregarded voters’ clear decision to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution and has continued to allow a cruel, wholly unconstitutional ban to continue being enforced, jeopardizing the lives and wellbeing of thousands of people.
This early and medically unnecessary abortion ban left too many people in Ohio without options and forced others to travel out of state to obtain the abortion care they needed. This ruling is an important step in restoring abortion access for Ohioans.
The National Abortion Hotline will continue to provide patients across the country with the accurate information and assistance they need to access the abortion care they deserve, including funding to support travel and care. If you need information about your options, you can call the National Abortion Hotline: 1-800-772-9100.”
