Supreme Court Rejects Challenge to Mifepristone

Statement from Brittany Fonteno, President and CEO of National Abortion Federation:

Today’s Supreme Court decision to overturn the 5th Circuit Court’s ruling on mifepristone is an important step in ensuring people can continue to access the abortion care they need. While we are relieved that medication abortion with mifepristone remains available today, we remain outraged that this case got as far as it did in the first place. This case had no basis in medicine and is part of anti-abortion extremists’’ wider, politically-motivated agenda to ban abortion nationwide. 

Mifepristone has an outstanding safety record and has been used by more than five million people to safely end a pregnancy. Access to medication abortion is essential to ensuring people can make decisions about their bodies and lives based on what’s best for their individual circumstances. 

Of course, the fight for true reproductive freedom is far from over, as states continue to pass cruel abortion bans and anti-abortion lawmakers attack everything from IVF and contraceptives to gender-affirming care. NAF won’t stop fighting until everyone, everywhere – no matter who they are, where they live, or how much money they have – has the ability to access evidence-based, compassionate, and equitable abortion care.
